Terra Resort Group Announces Casa Madrona Renovation

June 16, 2011 (Sausalito, CA) – Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa in Sausalito, California, part of Terra Resort Group, has opened a new chapter in its rich 126-year history with the completion of a multi-million-dollar renovation. The destination has always been a romantic hideaway for San Francisco and California residents and now savvy travelers near and far will enjoy the hotel's extensive makeover. The year-long project was overseen by the architecture and interior design firm TruexCullins of Burlington, Vermont, which handled the guestroom renovations as well as the addition of the new 3,000-square foot Spa at Casa Madrona.

Drawing inspiration from sea, sky and unique features that have landed Casa Madrona on the National Register of Historic Places, the new design pays homage to cottage accommodations and the William Barrett Mansion, a 19th-century Victorian beauty with original details still intact. The result is a modern setting that retains the hotel's historic charm and integrates its hillside location overlooking Richardson Bay.

"The combination of rich history and the property's hillside, oceanfront location is what gives Casa Madrona such a strong sense of place," said Ryan Schoen, General Manager of Casa Madrona.

The Redesign

The goal of the renovation was to refresh Casa Madrona while preserving its history and showcasing the location. For instance, cottage bathrooms and the new Spa now have bottle-green countertops and shelving created from recycled glass – dynamic touches that play off nautical life on Richardson Bay.

Similarly, lobby signage displays the Casa Madrona logo on sailcloth – hung, backlit, against a marine ocean blue wall behind the front desk. The lobby has 30-foot ceilings and a fireplace inspired by the hearths in each of the hotel's 22 hillside cottages. Bookcases extending 25-feet on each side of the lobby fireplace are lined with reference works on the marine and artistic heritage of Sausalito.

The Cottages

Newly renovated Cottages located on the hillside above Sausalito offer casual elegance inspired by nautical interiors. All rooms face the water and many have balconies offering vibrant bay views. The Cottages provide spacious accommodations ranging in size from 530 to 800 square feet.

The redesign of Casa Madrona can be seen as a backdrop to the incredible view that greets guests. Morning, noon, night, the quality of the light and the sea sounds and views are breathtaking. Kim Deetjen with TruexCullins explained, "We couldn't compete with nature in this case, so we complemented it." 46 of Casa Madrona's 63 guest accommodations were renovated in the first phase of the redesign and the remaining 17 will be ready by late 2011.

The Spa

The new Spa at Casa Madrona is focused around the life-giving power of water therapy through an extensive menu of nourishing treatments. Under direction of new Spa Director, Karen McFarlane, the spa menu includes massages, body therapies, skin therapies and nail care using both Pino and Thalgo lines. Bringing ancient wisdom into modern day, those same elements reflect Casa Madrona's unique location with Shore (Earth), Wind (Air), Sun (Fire) and Sea (Water) winding their way into treatments.

Blessed with excellent weather, eclectic shopping and spectacular waterfront views, Sausalito is often compared to the Mediterranean Riviera. Casa Madrona places travelers in the heart of one of America's premier art communities and within proximity to San Francisco and wine country.

The hotel is offering a Simply Sausalito package, with gift certificates to two famed local restaurants to create a perfect Sausalito day. The package is available through December 31 and rates start at $177 per night. For reservations or more information, please contact (800) 288-0502 or visit www.casamadrona.com.
